John de Newtown

John established his management training and consultancy practice in 1990, following 20 years of industrial experience in technical, line and project management positions. He specialises in providing project management training and in assisting clients develop the performance of their project management teams. He also provides clients with specialist consultancy support to individual projects and longer term programmes designed to improve all aspects of project management performance within their business.

John has worked with a wide range of client companies including leading organisations in Engineering, Manufacturing, Construction, Defence, IS/IT and Education. He is the course director for a number of public seminars in project management, a visiting lecturer in project management at Manchester University and an associate with Loughborough Business School. Whilst his work is centred in the UK he has also run numerous programmes for clients in Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and the USA.

Before setting up his consulting practice, John gained substantial hands-on experience in a variety of professional and management positions. After academic studies and training in the automotive industry he joined Ilford Limited, a leading manufacturer of photographic products. Between 1974 and 1980 he progressed through technical and team leadership roles to become Manager of Engineering Development, managing a portfolio of multi-disciplinary projects. During the early 1980’s he was heavily involved in a major business restructuring programme after which his role broadened to include the management of a number of business-wide initiatives ranging from manufacturing improvement projects to new product development programmes. During this period he also co-ordinated international project teams involved in technology transfer and carried out assignments in support of strategic business development.

John is a Chartered Engineer. His qualifications include an Honours Degree in Applied Physics from the Lanchester Polytechnic and a Masters Degree in Engineering Science from Oxford University. He is a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, The Institute of Physics and The Association of Project Management. After work, John enjoys time with his family and various leisure interests including motor sport, music, and photography.
